HIV

Since its creation, HMST has been dedicated to fighting infectious diseases — with HIV at its heart.

According to the WHO, HIV remains a major global health challenge, having claimed more than 44 million lives. Transmission continues across the world, with the greatest impact in Africa.

Today, HMST is redefining its approach. We see HIV not as a barrier to health, but as a condition people can live with — and thrive with. Our focus is on empowering people living with HIV to support one another, share their stories, and stand up for their rights. We work closely with key populations to understand their realities and ensure every voice is heard in the fight against HIV.

Malaria

HMST has also strengthened its capacity to combat malaria, committing as much as possible to eradicating malaria by 2023.

As climate change alters rainfall patterns, temperatures, and mosquito habitats, malaria transmission is expanding to new regions and intensifying in others.

In response, HMST has adapted its strategies to these evolving realities—focusing on prevention, early detection, and sustainable control measures tailored to local conditions.

We work hand in hand with national health authorities to integrate malaria prevention, diagnosis, and treatment into existing health service structures. By training healthcare workers, supporting community-based interventions, and improving access to effective antimalarial medicines, HMST helps ensure that malaria care becomes an essential, routine part of national healthcare delivery.

Support to the Development of Funding Requests across 25 Countries

Since 2019, HMST has carried out 36 projects on behalf of Expertise France to help countries develop funding applications to the Global Fund for at least one of the three major infectious diseases.

The consulting teams sent by HMST organize consultations with stakeholders, conduct priority-setting workshops, prepare detailed cost estimates for activities, and draft proposals, resulting in an approved submission that complies with national and international guidelines. This ensures that the application is tailored to local needs and aligned with Global Fund standards.

Once again, our work will enable better coordination among national and multilateral actors to maximize the overall impact of the resulting projects.

Cross-cutting evaluation of projects funded by the Initiative - HIV through the ages

Between 2024 and 2025, HMST was commissioned by Expertise France l'Initiative (EF) to conduct a cross-cutting evaluation/capitalization of six funded projects across the ages. The approach combined individual evaluation, literature review, scoping workshops, qualitative and quantitative data collection, and cross-cutting analysis structured to create a learning platform between the projects' stakeholders and EF around four themes: access to care, SRH and gender, mental health, and advocacy.

HMST was proud to carry out this assessment in ten countries, which allowed us to learn more about how to treat and live with HIV at any age. And we did so directly from inspiring project leaders.
